Why Jonathan Kuminga Was Benched: Steve Kerr Explains vs Bulls | Warriors NBA (2026)

Jonathan Kuminga's unexpected benching during the Golden State Warriors' decisive win against the Chicago Bulls has sparked considerable buzz. What exactly led to this surprising decision by Coach Steve Kerr?

Kuminga, a player who often finds himself in the spotlight, was notably absent from the court during the Warriors' impressive 123-91 victory. Coach Kerr, when questioned about Kuminga's situation, kept his cards close to his chest, stating that the specifics were 'private.' He did, however, mention that some players complemented Jimmy Butler's style of play better, given they don't occupy the same position. Kerr also highlighted the contributions of Gui Santos, adding that being out of the rotation is a common experience for almost everyone except the team's star players.

Kuminga himself addressed the situation, shedding some light on the matter.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Butler, who had missed the previous two games, returned to face his former team, showcasing his skills with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Meanwhile, Santos, playing off the bench, contributed 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists in 20 minutes of play. With the Warriors dominating the game, Kerr saw no need to alter his strategy.

This benching appears to be part of a larger trend of reduced playing time for Kuminga this season. Initially, he played over 30 minutes in 6 of his first 9 games. However, he hasn't reached the 30-minute mark since then. In fact, prior to the Bulls game, he hadn't even played 25 minutes in his previous 7 contests.

Kuminga's role has fluctuated before, even during last season, and he was completely out of the rotation during some of the postseason. While he often displays his potential, consistency has been a challenge throughout his career.

And this is the part most people miss...

The extended contract negotiations during the offseason, which ended with an agreement, also add another layer to the situation. His contract includes a club option for the 2026-27 season, which doesn't necessarily indicate he's a long-term fixture for the franchise.

It's not hard to imagine the Warriors potentially trading him, given the contract's terms and his inconsistent role. For now, Kuminga is seeing less playing time in Kerr's rotation.
