Such is the intriguing case of "Kiss of the Spider Woman," a film that, in my opinion, is one of the most criminally underrated cinematic musicals of recent memory, now finding a new home on Hulu.

What makes "Kiss of the Spider Woman" so compelling, and perhaps so challenging for mainstream audiences, is its rich and layered origin. Personally, I think its very DNA is a testament to its artistic ambition. What makes this particularly fascinating is how writer/director Bill Condon uses this conceit – Molina (Tonatiuh) recounting her favorite film starring her idol, Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez), to her fellow inmate Valentin (Diego Luna) – to bridge starkly different tones and genres. It’s a bold move that, in my view, resulted in a film that is simultaneously a poignant queer romance, a searing anti-fascist political statement, and a dazzling homage to cinematic history.
Star Power and Undeniable Performances
One thing that immediately stands out is the sheer talent on display. Jennifer Lopez delivers what I consider a career-best performance, imbuing her role with a captivating blend of vulnerability and star power. And then there’s Diego Luna. His turn as Valentin is, as expected, passionate and politically charged, echoing the intensity he brought to his acclaimed role in "Andor." This pairing alone should have been enough to draw audiences in. What this really suggests is that even with exceptional performances and a unique artistic vision, a film’s success isn't guaranteed. Perhaps the distributor, Roadside Attractions, faced an uphill battle in marketing such a multifaceted film, or maybe the initial awareness was simply too low. Whatever the reasons, it’s a shame such a rich cinematic experience was largely overlooked in theaters.
A Second Chance on Streaming
This is where streaming services like Hulu become so crucial. They offer an opportunity for films that might have slipped through the cracks to be discovered by a new audience. Personally, I think "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is a perfect candidate for this. Its complex narrative and genre-bending approach might be better appreciated in a home viewing environment, where audiences can engage with it at their own pace. If you take a step back and think about it, this film is a testament to the power of storytelling across different mediums and eras.
