Trump Admin's Antisemitism Accusations: A Political Hit Job on UC? (2026)

A storm of controversy is brewing, with former US Department of Justice (DoJ) attorneys alleging political pressure to target the University of California (UC) system in an antisemitism investigation. This case has ignited a debate about the integrity of investigations and the influence of political agendas. Let's dive in.

According to insider accounts shared with the Los Angeles Times, several DoJ attorneys felt compelled to accuse the UC of discriminating against Jewish students and faculty, allegedly at the behest of the Trump administration. Some of these attorneys, who chose to remain anonymous, described the investigation as a 'hit job,' suggesting the outcome was predetermined. All nine attorneys involved in the case eventually resigned, citing ethical concerns.

Jen Swedish, a former DoJ lawyer who worked on the case against the University of California, Los Angeles, stated that political appointees essentially dictated the outcome before the investigation had even begun. This investigation was launched amid pro-Palestinian protests at UC campuses, mirroring a wave of activism against the war in Gaza across universities nationwide.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Trump administration initiated investigations into multiple US university campuses, as part of a broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and academic freedom. This has led to lawsuits and attempts to withhold research funding, aiming to bring universities in line with the administration's views.

Over the summer, the administration demanded UCLA pay a $1 billion fine and implement new policies to restore over $500 million in grant funding. However, a federal judge later blocked the administration from withholding funds and imposing fines, ruling that the administration used civil rights investigations to force universities to change their ideological stance.

The attorneys interviewed by the LA Times described rushed investigations driven by political objectives. One attorney even stated that, while acknowledging the existence of discrimination against Jewish people, the inquiry was a 'hit job' that would ultimately harm everyone involved.

Earlier this year, the DoJ's civil rights division concluded that UCLA had allowed antisemitic discrimination during pro-Palestinian protests. The university settled a lawsuit by Jewish students and a professor, paying $6.5 million and admitting to shortcomings.

Ejaz Baluch, a former DoJ attorney, noted that UCLA came closest to potentially breaking the law in its handling of civil rights complaints from Jewish employees, and there was enough information to warrant a lawsuit. However, he added, 'We believed that such a lawsuit had significant weaknesses.' Another attorney described the UCLA investigation as 'fraudulent and [a] sham.'

And this is the part most people miss... UCLA is also facing a lawsuit from pro-Palestinian protesters, who claim the university was negligent in preventing a violent attack on demonstrators by a pro-Israel group.

The US Department of Justice and the University of California have not yet issued a response to these allegations.

What do you think? Does this case highlight a concerning trend of political influence in investigations? Do you believe the DoJ attorneys' claims, or are there other factors at play? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
