Millions in Restaurant Tips Disappear from Digital Wallets: A Growing Concern
A recent crisis has left the restaurant industry in turmoil, with millions of dollars in tips reportedly missing from digital wallets managed by Everyday Payments, a payment processor serving Canadian restaurants. This issue has sparked investigations by both police and financial regulators, as well as concerns from industry leaders.
The British Columbia Restaurant and Foodservices Association has received panicked calls from at least 50 restaurants in the past 48 hours, with the majority of complaints coming from B.C. restaurants. However, the president and CEO, Ian Tostenson, estimates that the total loss could be in the millions, suggesting that there may be hundreds more restaurants affected across the country.
Everyday Payments offers a service that simplifies the process of paying staff tips, allowing restaurants to deposit money into a digital wallet held in trust for the employees. However, this system has apparently failed, leaving restaurants struggling to pay their staff.
The situation is exacerbated by the financial struggles of Everyday Payments' parent company, Everyday People Financial. With an accumulated deficit of $71.4 million, the company's ability to manage its operations and user funds is in question. This has led to concerns about the security of the missing funds and the potential for further financial instability.
The Bank of Canada, responsible for supervising payment service providers under the Retail Payment Activities Act, is now investigating the matter. They are working to ensure that payment service providers mitigate operational risks, report incidents, and safeguard user funds. The Bank of Canada's spokesperson, Akim Thibouthot, confirmed their awareness of the issue and their ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the Whistler RCMP has received at least one report of missing money, and the investigation is ongoing. This crisis highlights the vulnerability of digital payment systems and the potential risks for both businesses and consumers, leaving many restaurants and their employees in a state of uncertainty.
