The eagerly anticipated opening of the new Metro line in Dudley, a town in the Black Country, has finally been given a firm date. But here's where it gets controversial...
The Long Wait for Dudley's Businesses
In a recent council meeting, leaders revealed that the Midlands Metro tramline will welcome passengers in Dudley at the end of August. However, this news has left local businesses feeling frustrated, as they've been enduring the impacts of construction delays for what feels like an eternity.
Councillor Steve Edwards raised concerns about the support available for these struggling businesses in Dudley Town Centre, especially with the line's completion still months away.
A Delayed Project with a Definitive Date
The original plan was for the line to open in 2024, but with the addition of the second phase extending the line to Merry Hill and Brierley Hill, and subsequent funding challenges, the project faced significant setbacks. Increased costs further delayed the project, which is managed by Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midland Combined Authority (WMCA).
While construction of the first phase into Dudley is expected to finish in Spring 2026, the line won't be operational until drivers complete their training.
Negotiating Support for Affected Businesses
Dudley's leaders have been actively engaging with the WMCA and West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker to secure assistance for town centre businesses. Councillor Patrick Harley, the leader of Dudley Council, acknowledged the proactive approach of the Mayor in exploring compensation options for affected businesses.
"The mayor is very proactive looking at how we can try and offer compensation to some of those businesses that have been affected. We can't offer compensation to them all, but the CA are looking at that. To date, some businesses, particularly around Birdcage Walk, have received in excess of £100,000."
However, with additional delays, more support is needed, and Councillor Edwards highlighted the potential for further business closures in the coming months.
A Complex Project, Not Under Dudley's Control
Councillor Harley emphasized that while the project could have been better planned, it's important to recognize that this isn't solely a Dudley Council project. They didn't control the pace of the project's progress.
So, with the announcement of this definitive date, the question remains: Will the Metro line's opening bring the much-needed relief to Dudley's businesses, or will it be too little, too late? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
