Miami Dolphins Eyeing Jeff Hafley as New Head Coach (2026)

In a significant development for the Miami Dolphins, reports indicate that the organization is making strides to secure Jeff Hafley as their next head coach. If this agreement comes to fruition, Hafley will take on the role of the franchise's 12th full-time head coach.

Hafley has been at the helm of the Green Bay Packers’ defense for the last two seasons, showcasing his skills after a successful four-year tenure as the head coach at Boston College. Under his leadership, the Packers have achieved commendable defensive rankings, allowing an average of 313.2 yards per game, which placed them at 11th in the league. They also ranked ninth in rushing defense and in Defensive Expected Points Added (EPA), and 11th in passing defense during this period.

This potential hiring occurs during a transformative phase for the Dolphins. The team recently parted ways with general manager Chris Grier on October 31 after over nine seasons in office. Shortly thereafter, head coach Mike McDaniel was dismissed just days after concluding a disappointing 7-10 season. Prior to McDaniel’s firing, the Dolphins had enlisted the help of Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who now serves as an ESPN analyst, to assist in their search for a new general manager. This led to the appointment of Jon-Eric Sullivan, a former Packers executive, who brings with him a wealth of experience from his two decades in various roles within the Green Bay organization.

The connection between Hafley and Sullivan could prove advantageous, given their previous two seasons working together in Green Bay.

Should Hafley step into the role, he would mark the seventh head coach for the Dolphins since 2007. Notably, he would be only the second coach during this period, following Brian Flores, to possess a defensive background.

McDaniel, who achieved a record of 35 wins to 33 losses over his four years, was brought on board in 2022 after a year as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and several seasons as an assistant under head coach Kyle Shanahan. Interestingly, Hafley also shares a similar history; he spent two seasons with the 49ers, initially under Chip Kelly and remaining with the team to work as the defensive backs coach during Shanahan’s first two seasons.

After departing the 49ers in 2019, Hafley joined Ohio State as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for one season before taking the head coaching position at Boston College. His coaching resume also includes roles as a defensive backs coach for both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns.

The Dolphins face crucial decisions moving forward, particularly concerning the starting quarterback position. Tua Tagovailoa, who signed a substantial contract in 2024, is locked in until 2028. However, he ended the previous season with a starting record of 6-8 and was benched in the final month, raising questions about his future.

Hafley’s primary challenge will be to lead the Dolphins back into playoff contention, a feat the team has not achieved since the 2023 season. They also hold the unfortunate distinction of having not won a playoff game since the 2000 season, marking the longest active postseason drought in the NFL. To restore the Dolphins' competitive edge, Hafley must not only enhance the team's performance but also navigate a challenging division that includes formidable opponents like the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, both of whom successfully reached the playoffs this year.
