A Tragic Collision: Tourists Among the Injured in Machu Picchu Train Crash
In a devastating incident near the iconic Inca site of Machu Picchu in Peru, a head-on collision between two tourist trains has resulted in one fatality and at least 30 injuries, including foreign nationals. The accident, which occurred on a narrow track section surrounded by a rock face and dense forest, is currently under police investigation.
The trains, operated by Inca Rail SA and PeruRail SA, were en route to the famous archaeological site, which attracts over a million visitors annually. A health official revealed that approximately 20 of the injured individuals are in a serious condition. The presence of foreign tourists among the injured has been confirmed by a police officer.
Social media posts and videos from the scene depicted the severely damaged locomotives facing each other on the track, with injured individuals receiving treatment on the forest-lined platform, adjacent to a massive rock. The railway company reported that the collision took place in the early afternoon on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT) near Qoriwayrachina, another archaeological site.
Machu Picchu, renowned for its precisely fitted stone bricks, was constructed in the 15th century by the Incas and served as a sanctuary for the Inca emperors. The site's popularity has surged by 25% over the past decade, but it has also faced challenges due to political unrest and management disputes. Protesters have occasionally blocked the railroad leading to the site.
Despite the tragic accident, Machu Picchu remains a must-visit destination. Visitors can reach the site by train to Aguas Calientes or embark on a four-day trek from Ollantaytambo.
