The Labour Party is teetering on the edge of a potentially divisive internal battle, and it’s all because of Andy Burnham’s possible return to Parliament. Mahmood, who chairs Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC), is in a delicate position. Speaking to Sky News, she explained that her role prevents her from endorsing or criticizing Burnham’s bid to stand in the Gorton and Denton byelection. However, she made it clear that the party cannot afford a prolonged period of instability. ‘Everyone has their own decisions to make, but let’s keep the psychodrama to a minimum,’ she said. ‘Labour governments don’t come along often, and we have a responsibility to make this one work.’
And this is the part most people miss: Burnham’s return isn’t just about filling a seat. It’s widely seen as a strategic move to position himself as a potential challenger to Keir Starmer’s leadership. While Burnham’s allies—including ministers, MPs, and trade union leaders—argue that his popularity and profile make him an asset, those close to Starmer are reportedly urging caution. The NEC meeting on Sunday will decide whether Burnham can even run, as it would require him to step down as Greater Manchester mayor, triggering an expensive byelection.
Mahmood later clarified on BBC1 that the decision would be made by a smaller ‘officers’ group’ within the NEC, a common practice for such matters. If approved, the NEC could still impose conditions, such as an all-women shortlist for the candidacy. ‘We’re taking this step by step,’ she explained. ‘First, we’ll decide if Andy can stand. Then, we’ll discuss the shortlisting process, including whether an all-women shortlist is appropriate.’
The question on everyone’s mind: If Burnham returns to Parliament, will he challenge Starmer? Mahmood trusts Burnham’s word that his intention is to support the current leadership. ‘Andy has been clear: he believes Keir is the best person to lead,’ she said. ‘I take him at his word—I’ve always found him to be trustworthy.’
