Gophers Dominate at Home: Minnesota First Chance Meet Highlights (2026)

Get ready for an exciting dive into the world of swimming! The Minnesota First Chance Meet has just wrapped up, and it's time to uncover some incredible performances and unexpected twists.

February 6-7, 2026, at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, Minneapolis, was a stage for an intense competition. Teams from the University of Minnesota, St. Thomas, and others went head-to-head, but it was the Gophers who stole the show.

As the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships approach, the Gophers are on fire! They delivered a stunning ten lifetime best performances over the weekend, leaving their competitors in the dust.

On the women's side, senior Ava Yablonski dominated the 500 free, finishing a remarkable 20 seconds ahead of the pack in 4:57.90. That's a new personal best, beating her 2021 time of 5:03.05. But here's where it gets interesting...

Minnesota's women's team boasted three swimmers who broke the 23-second barrier in the 50 freestyle! Junior Morgan Thomas, sophomores Kamdyn Periat and Rachel Conley took the top three spots, with Conley's time being a career best. Periat, not content with one record, also set a new personal best in the 200 back, finishing over six seconds ahead of the field.

Freshman Finnly Jollands had a breakthrough performance in the 200 IM, clocking the fastest time of the meet and her career in 2:02.44.

The women's 100 fly was a diverse affair, with six different schools represented in the top seven. Minnesota's Mira Keller took the gold, followed by St. Thomas' Emily Wooden and UW-La Crosse's Ava Pulvermacher.

Now, let's talk about the Gopher men. They dominated the 100 breast, taking the top five spots! Freshman Luke Mychalowych and his teammate Joe Polyak led the way, both setting season bests. An impressive feat, as all five Gopher breaststrokers finished under 55.5.

Alberto Hernandez, a senior at Minnesota, had a career-best performance in the 500 free, shaving over 15 seconds off his previous best from October.

The Gophers continued their dominance in the men's 50 free, claiming the top four spots. Sophomore Jacob Johnson took the win in 20.04, closely followed by junior Ryan Slonac, who set a lifetime best of 20.34. Slonac's success continued on day two, as he won the 400 IM with his fastest time of the season, 3:53.45, the only swimmer under 4:00.

But the meet wasn't all about the Gophers. St. Thomas' Miggy San Jose had an incredible performance in the men's 200 back, touching over seven seconds ahead of the field in a personal best 1:53.10.

And this is the part most people miss... the impact of these performances on the upcoming Big Ten Championships. With so many lifetime bests and dominant displays, the Gophers are poised to make a splash. But will they maintain this momentum? Only time will tell.

What do you think? Will the Gophers continue their winning streak, or will other teams surprise us? Let's discuss in the comments!
