The BMW iX5 is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, offering a compelling alternative to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) models. What makes this vehicle truly stand out is its innovative battery pack design and chassis technology, which address some of the most pressing challenges in EV development. The iX5's battery pack is a masterpiece of engineering, assembled directly into a pack and integrated seamlessly into the vehicle's floor. This design not only reduces the overall height of the pack but also avoids the awkward double-decker feel often associated with EVs. The engineers' meticulous attention to detail, finding millimetres here and there, has resulted in a more compact and efficient battery, keeping the weight under control. This is a significant achievement, as a larger battery could have pushed the iX5 over the 3.5-tonne threshold, requiring an HGV licence. Instead, the iX5 will likely weigh around 3.0 tonnes, a small but crucial victory in the quest for lighter EVs. The chassis technology of the iX5 is equally impressive. The vehicle is equipped with air suspension on both axles, with significant improvements made to the rear axle. The separation of the air spring and damper has increased the internal volume of the airbag, allowing for a softer ride when needed. The adaptive damper, mounted further outboard, enhances control and improves the balance of ride and handling. The front suspension, while largely unchanged, is supported by the rear suspension, which has been relocated to optimize its lever effect. The iX5 also offers optional active anti-roll bars and four-wheel steering, further enhancing its handling characteristics. The design of the iX5 is set to be revealed later this month, and it is expected to adopt the smooth Neue Klasse design language introduced by the iX3.
