The Ashes series faces a potential shake-up as key players, including Australian captain Pat Cummins, could be sidelined. This news has sent ripples of concern through the Australian camp and cricket fans alike.
Spinner Nathan Lyon is expected to be out for the final two Tests against England due to a hamstring injury sustained in Adelaide. And Cummins is highly unlikely to play in the fourth Test in Melbourne, starting on Boxing Day, with doubts also lingering over his availability for the Sydney finale on January 3rd.
"I doubt I’ll be playing Melbourne," Cummins admitted after Australia secured a series-clinching 3-0 lead over England. "And then we’ll have a chat about Sydney. Certainly before the series, it was while the series was live, let’s take on the risk and have a crack at it. Now it’s done, I think we need to have a chat about it."
Cummins, despite his injury concerns, played a crucial role in the third Test, taking six wickets in Australia's 82-run victory. This was his first competitive cricket match since a back stress injury last July. Lyon, Australia’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, suffered his hamstring injury while fielding, adding to the team's woes.
The 38-year-old Lyon was seen on crutches after being sent for scans, casting a shadow over his participation in the remaining matches. "It doesn’t look great," Cummins said of Lyon's injury. "I don’t know yet, but seeing someone on crutches doesn’t really bode well for a Test match a week away. Gaz is pretty close to irreplaceable … but we’ve got some guys who have already had a taste of international cricket around the traps; other guys have done really well in domestic cricket.”
But here's where it gets controversial: the selection dilemma. Left-arm orthodox spinner Matt Kuhnemann and offspinners Todd Murphy and uncapped Corey Rocchiccioli are potential replacements for Lyon. Cummins also hinted that resting fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland, who have played all three Ashes Tests, would be a tough call for the selectors.
"Like always, we will probably give it 48 hours and see how everyone pulls up," Cummins stated. "Good luck to anyone telling Starcy or even Scotty they’re going to miss a Boxing Day Test if they’re fully fit.”
Fast bowlers Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett remained with the squad in Adelaide, while Jhye Richardson trained with the Australians before being released for BBL duties.
And this is the part most people miss: Star batsman Steve Smith is expected to return on Boxing Day after missing the Adelaide Test due to vertigo.
