Imagine trying to navigate a complex bureaucratic system just to access benefits you're entitled to. Frustrating, right? Well, there's good news on the horizon for Malaysians! By January 2026, applying for PERKESO (Social Security Organisation) benefits is set to become significantly easier, promising a streamlined, online experience.
According to Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, this major shift towards digitalization will encompass applications under four key Acts: the Employees' Social Security Act 1969, the Self-Employed Social Security Act 2017, the Employment Insurance System Act 2017, and the Housewives' Social Security Act 2022. This means whether you're an employee, self-employed, seeking employment insurance, or a homemaker, you'll be able to file your claims online.
"To avoid inconvenience to contributors, applications can be submitted online using either a mobile phone or a computer starting Jan 1 next year," Ramanan stated during a press conference following his official visit to PERKESO Tower. He emphasized that this digital transformation is a "positive step as it will save time and reduce travel costs to PERKESO offices." Think of all the time and money saved by skipping those trips!
But the improvements don't stop there! Ramanan also highlighted ongoing efforts to implement the Non-Workplace Accident Scheme (SKBBK), also known as LINDUNG 24 Jam. The goal is to launch this scheme, offering round-the-clock protection, either by the first quarter or the end of the second quarter of next year. Ramanan, who assumed his role as Human Resources Minister after the recent Cabinet reshuffle, has pledged a transparent, smooth, and effective rollout of the scheme, which has already received approval from the Dewan Negara. This commitment aims to safeguard workers even outside of their work environment.
And this is the part most people miss... PERKESO is also turning its attention to the unique challenges faced by cross-border workers. Recognizing that nearly 400,000 Malaysians commute daily to Singapore via the Johor Causeway, PERKESO is exploring the introduction of a Traveller Scheme. A feasibility study is slated for next year to determine the most appropriate protection mechanism for these individuals. "I have instructed PERKESO to find ways to provide them with protection to ensure their safety," Ramanan affirmed. This demonstrates a commitment to protecting a vulnerable segment of the workforce.
Recognizing the financial strains faced by employers, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), PERKESO is also offering a helping hand. From today until the end of February next year, employers can benefit from an 80% reduction in Interest on Late Payment Contributions (ILPC), provided they settle the outstanding amount within that timeframe. "PERKESO has agreed to reduce the penalty by 80 per cent... the incentive is aimed at helping employers... to continue their operations," Ramanan explained. This is a significant relief for businesses struggling to stay afloat.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that focusing solely on online applications could disadvantage individuals with limited access to technology or digital literacy. While digitalization offers numerous benefits, it's crucial to ensure that alternative methods remain available to cater to the diverse needs of the population.
